Further to the success of AL Science students from Nuwara Eliya performing well the GCE AL 2023 exams after the revision classes facilitated by SJC87 initiative, we have pledged our support for the same in 2024. Exam preparation classes have now started in Nuwara Eliya and Badulla Zones.

AL exams are scheduled to take place in late November. 

GCE AL EXAM PREPARATION IN NUWARA ELIYA 2024

We have been supporting students and schools in various extra curricular activities, whether its Sports, Music or other talent events

3 Students advance to National level championship 2024 for Pole Vault from Welimada Tamil Maha Vidyalaym, Uva Province. Realizing the talent in some of the students, SJC87 initiative bought the school a Pole Vault in October 2023.

Also provided were the sports shoes needed for this sport.

Five students from Palai Central College, the only school from the North to be part of a 1300 voice choir at the National Music Festival 2024 on August 3rd at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium. SJC87 initiative provided the funding necessary for the transportation, accommodation and meals for these students.

Prize Day at Vivehanantha Vidyalayam, Kilinochchi

SJC87 Initiative supported the Prize Day at Vivehanantha Vidyalayam by providing the funding needed for all the medals.

SUPPORTING EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Each year, SJC87 Initiative works with Zonal Education departments to prepare Grade 5 students for their scholarship examinations. Exams this year are scheduled to take place on September 15, 2024

This year also we are working with many zones in the Northern Province and Nuwara Eliya Zone in the Central Province. 

For more than 12 years, this project has been supported by Tamil Aid UK.

'87 INITIATIVE NITE IN TORONTO ON 20 APRIL 2024

More than 500 of our supporters attended our first ever event, making it a success. With music from local talents plus DJ and dancing, we celebrated 15 years of helping the underprivileged with their education back home.

We had silent auctions for 8 paintings from our sponsored students from the Art and Design program at University of Jaffna. One of the painting went for a whopping $1,000 and raising a total amount of $2,500.

FURNITURE AND TELEVISION FOR SPECIAL NEEDS SCHOOL UNITS

Water quality in some areas of Mullaitivu District has been low for ages. To address this issue, SJC87 INITIATIVE has facilitated water filtration systems at three different schools in the area.

More than 2,000 students and staff would benefit by having clean drinking water on a daily basis.

WATER FILTRATION AT MULLAITIVU SCHOOLS

It is a well known fact that students from under resourced areas struggle in Science, Mathematics and English subjects.

To address this issue, SJC87 Initiative offers special scholarships to students in the GCE AL Biological Science and Mathematics stream in the North.

In Nuwaraeliya and Badualla Education zones, we are addressing this in a different way with special seminars to all the students in these two streams, to better prepare them for the exams, which are scheduled to take place in early January.

Approximately 170 students are learning in these streams in Nuwaraeliya Zone Division 2 and 40 students are learning in Badulla Zone.  These special sessions started in August and they will run through the end of December.

GCE AL SCIENCE SEMINARS IN UPCOUNTRY

Our GCE OL Revision programs in the Vanni region has been successful in the long term, from only 42% of students passing and proceeding to GCE AL in 2011 to the current 75%.

In addition to expanding this program to ISLANDS education zone in the Jaffna District, we are expanding this program to NUWARA ELIYA education zone. This will assist 3500 students scheduled to sit the GCE OL 2022 exam in May 2023.

Total budget for this program LKR 800,000

Amount is AUD$3200 / CAD$ 2900 / GBP 1800 / USD 2200

GCE OL REVISION IN NURWARA ELIYA ZONE

GCE A/L Science and Technology Scholarships - 2 Years only

When we started our work in Vanni, only 10% of the students were choosing Science streams in the GCE A/L classes.

We started by offering scholarships to 10  students who choose to study science streams in the GCE A/L 2015 batch.

We all know the importance of Science education as it produces better job opportunities. On top of that, students from rural areas have better chances of getting into Universities with lower scores based on district allocations.

We have gradually included Technology stream and increased the number of students for this scholarship to 120 students from the GCE A/L 2024 Batch, including 25 students from upcountry region. The number of students choosing Science and Technology streams are close to 20% now

We are still looking for sponsorships for 15 of these students, let us know if you can help out. 

Sponsorship amounts are AUD$400 / CAD$400 / GBP 220 / USD 300 per year for 2 years only.

GCE AL Science Scholarships - Spreading to Upcountry

Most of you are aware that Island education zone sits at the bottom of the table on the GCE O/L pass percentage, which is the ratio of students proceeding to GCE A/L based on their performance in the GCE O/L exams.

To address this issue, SJC87 initiative is supporting the zone conduct special exam preparation classes at 11 centres covering all the schools in the entire zone.  GCE O/L 2022 exams are scheduled to take place in May 2023.

GCE OL REVISION IN ISLANDS EDUCATION ZONE

As most of you are aware,  we have three different categories of sponsorship programs, the third one being University student sponsorship. We are currently supporting 256 University students and the need continues to increase. We can take this in two different ways. We can take this positively as more and more students from underprivileged areas are getting into University, especially the number of student getting into University from the upcountry is quite encouraging. On the other hand, the recent financial crisis has pushed a lot of families into poverty.
